Nor do we see the docking\n\nof our wings and tail as crippling or mutilation,\nbut cautionary (inbred as we are, caudal cancer\n\nstill kills too many of us) and thus no more barbaric\nthan circumcision or other body modification,\n\nfrom tattoos to piercing. As for why we do\nwhat we do, often-cited answers include\n\nevolutionary fatigue, hormonal drift, toxic\nparenting, or morbid attraction to the forbidden,\n\nbut the truth is far more simple: we are part of\nand subject to the same continuum of desire\n\nas everything else that lives. Yes, my incredulous\nfriends: even creatures with scales, chilled blood,\n\nand antediluvian genes are capable of ardor.\nAnd though daily we struggle for acceptance,\n\nour long-range hope is this: that someday we\nand our Arthurian paramours will be allowed\n\nto walk down the streets unharassed, without\nbeing spat upon or called names, and the world,\n\ndespite our long history of enmity, will recognize\nand sanctify the union of our two disparate species \u00e2\u20ac\u201d\n\nwe, the fire-breathing Capulets; they, the lance-\nbearing and resplendently-armored Montagues \u00e2\u20ac\u201d\n\nfor it is not apostasy that flickers in our hearts,\nbut love.
