Music is sorcery.\nThough Calypso promised him immortality,\nshe finally had to let him return to sea\nat the order of Zeus, and set him free.\n \nCalypso was the first feminist Greek goddess:\nshe then complained to Zeus\nthat goddesses were not allowed  \nto sleep with mortals, as gods could.\nBut it did no good.\n \nSorceress Circe of Aeaea  \nbewitched his men with song too, then wine\nthat turned them all to swine.\n \nHermes gave Odysseus an herb called <em>moly.<\/em>\nNow immune to her spell, he set them free.\n \nCirce was in love with him also.\nBut it was never mutual with either enchantress\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\nthough both were madly in love with Odysseus\ngetting home was his one obsession.\n                   \nMagical women get lonely on their islands.              \nIn bed, no lover whispers at their side\nThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only the murmurs of the wind and tide.\n \nAnd when a sailor does arrive,\nthe gods tell them to set him free.\nHe is more important, and must continue his quest.\n \nSo obey they must,  \nfor they are not the gods of Olympus,  \nor even demigods like Odysseus--\nJust enchantresses, isolated on their islands,\nwhere the men wash up like driftwood thrown ashore\nor like seagulls soaring over, then seen no more.\n \n <\/font><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lorraine Schein No man is an island\u00e2\u20ac\u201d but magical women are.
