{"id":1153,"date":"2016-07-11T08:04:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T15:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2016-07-09T08:20:25","modified_gmt":"2016-07-09T15:20:25","slug":"1153","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/?p=1153","title":{"rendered":"Cobblestone Dragon by Herb Kauderer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1156\" src=\"http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/800px-Liao_dynasty_stone_dragon_sculpture.jpg\" alt=\"800px-Liao_dynasty_stone_dragon_sculpture\" width=\"800\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/800px-Liao_dynasty_stone_dragon_sculpture.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/800px-Liao_dynasty_stone_dragon_sculpture-300x117.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.polutexni.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/800px-Liao_dynasty_stone_dragon_sculpture-768x299.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Atenlea is a peaceful place,<br \/>\nbut still a place of man,<br \/>\n&amp; deep inside, man fears nature\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fury.<\/p>\n<p>So, from the very first distant clamber<br \/>\nthey take note.<\/p>\n<p>It starts as a distant murmur of tumbling rocks<br \/>\nthat perks ears &amp; lifts heads.<br \/>\nA clatter of rockslide<br \/>\nwhere no rocks are loose.<br \/>\nSoon it grows into the rumble<br \/>\nof an earthquake or tornado.<\/p>\n<p>Like a field of busy mice suddenly met<br \/>\nby a family of hungry cats, they flee.<br \/>\nSlow &amp; weak<br \/>\ntrail behind the scatter of raucous panic.<br \/>\nIn minutes Atenlea is left<br \/>\nwith those few who cannot run, the left behinds.<\/p>\n<p>Gradually they limp &amp; crawl<br \/>\nto benches that line<br \/>\nthe north side of the town square.<br \/>\nSeven humans gathered<br \/>\nto fight fear &amp; meet fate.<br \/>\nThey console<br \/>\n&amp; ready themselves for anything.<br \/>\nAnything except what greets them.<\/p>\n<p>The noise &amp; trembling ground<br \/>\nare no work of nature.<br \/>\nThey come with the Cobblestone Dragon.<br \/>\nHard round sections of his being<br \/>\nclatter &amp; rumble &amp; roar<br \/>\n&amp; freely roll within.<\/p>\n<p>His long thick tail follows<br \/>\nas horizontal avalanche<br \/>\nas he walks slowly &amp; deliberately<br \/>\nplacing each step carefully<br \/>\nto avoid destroying the city<br \/>\nor the retinue of unhearing creatures<br \/>\nthat surround him.<\/p>\n<p>Fully in the town square, he stops.<br \/>\nSeven stare, blinking &amp; unsure,<br \/>\nconfused at a dragon with an entourage<br \/>\nas diverse as a fever dream, cleaning<br \/>\nthe tracks of the Cobblestone Dragon.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly the dragon speaks.<br \/>\nHe asks who &amp; why. Surprised<br \/>\nthe seven speak haltingly at first.<br \/>\nBut as the strangest town meeting ever<br \/>\nwears on<br \/>\nthey find sharing life stories easy.<\/p>\n<p>When they are through, silence falls<br \/>\nuntil one timid &amp; bent-legged child<br \/>\nasks the dragon for his story.<\/p>\n<p>Silently he ponders<br \/>\nhis troubled but welcome existence.<br \/>\nHe travels once more<br \/>\nthe long road of his past.<br \/>\nHe begins where he was conjured,<br \/>\npieced together from commonest remains.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly<br \/>\ncharged with life<br \/>\nhe was born thrashing &amp; roaring.<\/p>\n<p>All fled, even she who birthed him.<br \/>\nHe was alone.<\/p>\n<p>Until he met other dragonkind<br \/>\nhe didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even know<br \/>\nhow slow &amp; awkward he was among his kin.<\/p>\n<p>Only with time did he understand<br \/>\nthe dignity denied him in creation.<br \/>\nThat realization began the quest<br \/>\nto gain what was missing.<\/p>\n<p>On the way he learned that<br \/>\nevery dignity, like every face<br \/>\nis unique.<\/p>\n<p>Ages have passed since then<br \/>\nbut he finds no rest.<br \/>\nAnd now<br \/>\nrecalling his long &amp; difficult life<br \/>\nhe is certain he has no words<br \/>\nto make these humans understand.<\/p>\n<p>His magics<br \/>\nlike the stones of his creation<br \/>\nare of the smallest &amp; commonest kind,<br \/>\nbut he believes they will suffice.<br \/>\nFrom within comes a vision<br \/>\ncharged with the heat of his desire<br \/>\n&amp; tailored to each who see.<\/p>\n<p>Visions would be enough but he does not stop.<br \/>\nHe ignores the drain of his exertions<br \/>\n&amp; reaches within once more.<\/p>\n<p>With a touch<br \/>\nhe heals these humans<br \/>\nwho have given<br \/>\nto his heart &amp; knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>For a time he rests<br \/>\nbut his desire never fails.<br \/>\nHis quest resumes<br \/>\nwith a slow walk away from the city.<br \/>\nLittle has changed<br \/>\nsave that his retinue<br \/>\nhas increased by seven.<\/p>\n<p>Days after his departure<br \/>\nthe populace struggles home<br \/>\namazed to find Atenlea intact.<\/p>\n<p>The clever among them<br \/>\nfind traces of the dragon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s passing.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, seven are missed.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusions are drawn &amp; stories told.<br \/>\nThroughout the countryside<br \/>\nguards &amp; lookouts are posted.<br \/>\nThose brave enough, are sent to scout<br \/>\nbut they find nothing.<\/p>\n<p>In time danger fades &amp; memory grows.<\/p>\n<p>Seven stones are set in the graveyard.<br \/>\nSongs are written.<br \/>\nTears are cried.<\/p>\n<p>And as years pass<br \/>\nthe day\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s events become<br \/>\nbut one more chapter<br \/>\nin the bloody legend<br \/>\nof the Cobblestone Dragon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Atenlea is a peaceful place, but still a place of man, &amp; deep inside, man fears nature\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fury.
