\nfrom bottom wardrobe door.
\nHis wife in the kitchen
\nhair tied back like Baba Yaga
\n& holding root vegetables
\nlike forgotten children.<\/p>\n
Uncle spreads the cards like extended fingers
\nsplit from a mandrake plant
\nslices the deck down the middle
\nand holds one out to me:<\/p>\n
“Your legacy’s in the numbers;
\nin seven of cups and ace of pentacles
\nin the wheel of fortune
\n& the devil (Capricorn)
\nlike the early January blessing
\nof snowfall on your birth.”<\/p>\n
My parents never came home
\none night in midsummer.
\nA tree split down the middle
\nas if it was the tower
\ncars wheels spinning like disks
\n&blood like a magicians cloth
\nover pavement. I was an
\norphan. A child of legend,
\na page of suffering until
\npotato soup kept me warm

\nupon aces and aces
\nthen he blows like the wind
\nlike frost giants
\nlike Loki and the Stregas of the forest
\n& everything falls down again.<\/p>\n

“Your future’s in black water,” he says
\nas he builds and bends and builds again.<\/p>\n
“Obscured until the next night
\nwhen the star chases the moon
\nand the sun opens up to the world,
\nendlessly repeating itself

\nuntil I can cast runes at the bottom
