Night after night, your father’s house
\nfilled with the ghosts of sailors who did not drown,
\nthe whale-voices of their sonar
\neddying from the click and ping of washing dishes,
\ntheir wet footprints crowding the shower
\nthat left no steam on the finger-painted glass.
\nUnder the moon, they picked out shadows
\ndeft as pencil-sketched pin-ups\u00e2\u20ac\u201d
\ncigarette smoke and crew cuts,
\nthe bare-chested glint of dog tags and sweat.
\nWhen you snapped on the bedside lamp
\nto men’s whispered laughter,
\nseventy years of acey-deucey
\nscattered in the blank wash of light.
\nAnd always the humming blast-furnace bore of the engines,
\nthe vibrating skin of steel that sweats beneath the sea
\nlike the heartbeat of the war
\nthat took your father
\nand gave him back with his inventions
\nlike your stepfather with his book,
\nthe ghosts with their lives,
\nphantoms only of their Pacific years
\nuntil the day they vanished
\nas if folded away in a shell-braced suitcase
\nwith navy shirts and journalist’s notes
\nto await the second coming of the Cunard-White Star Line,
\nas if put ashore in a strange country
\nof love between earth and air
