Then when he neglects to purchase<br \/>\nthe root the following day, he must make no comment<br \/>\non the fact but refer instead to a forgotten poet.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, a week later a waif will appear<br \/>\nat the aspirant\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s window, and for two months<br \/>\nteach nothing but the vowels from sunset to midnight.<br \/>\nOnly when each vowel is perfect,<br \/>\ndoes the second teacher arrive, not to teach<br \/>\nthe consonants or tones, nor even the grammar.<br \/>\nInstead the elderly teacher will discuss the potentials,<br \/>\nthe branches Denshin did not take, the ways its vocabulary<br \/>\nmight have turned out, the lost dialects and linguistic distinctions<br \/>\namong smaller subsets of the people, most ignored<br \/>\nor actively suppressed. The standard language becomes<br \/>\ndefined by the variants it is not.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of this instruction, the third teacher will arrive,<br \/>\na shadowed figured who simply speaks the language.<br \/>\nWhen the elder talks of dialects, the shadowed one<br \/>\ntranslates every word into Denshin.<br \/>\nWhen the elder falls silent, the shadowed one speaks on,<br \/>\nletting the uncanny rhythm of the shadowed language<br \/>\nenter the mind of the aspirant, letting the words take root.<br \/>\nNever once is she quizzed on the declensions and agglutinations;<br \/>\nnever is he tested on which tense and why, but slowly<br \/>\nin the shadowed one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s word, all those rules and rhythms<br \/>\nare clear, with no need to explicate.<\/p>\n<p>When the aspirants finally speak their first words of Denshin,<br \/>\nthey find themselves in a market, offering black scarves and<br \/>\nelm saplings, and praise of flowers and poets that no one sees.<br \/>\nBy night, they take on the look of waifs.
