We had reservations,<\/div>\n

even our inferior hostelry was filled.<\/div>\n
Everyone wanted to visit the place<\/div>\n
before it was too late. Some tourists<\/div>\n
who expected lodging to be available<\/div>\n
had meltdowns right there in the dank<\/div>\n
lobby. We spent the debased currency<\/div>\n
as if it were water, but icy native eyes<\/div>\n
followed us with hostility, even though<\/div>\n
we learned a common local greeting<\/div>\n
(which translated roughly as Repent\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n
the end is near<\/em>). Their famed arcades <\/span><\/div>\n
appeared smaller than the guidebooks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/div>\n
gushing descriptions, and the details<\/div>\n
oddly rounded, compared to earlier<\/div>\n
photos. Uncooperative guards would<\/div>\n
not let us climb gleaming staircases<\/div>\n
(Slippery When Wet<\/em> signs impeded us<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
everywhere), nor allow us to set foot on<\/div>\n
translucent bridges, even when offered<\/div>\n
lavish bribes. Ancient statues of crystal<\/div>\n
seemed to have shrunk and smoothed<\/div>\n
further each time we passed by them.<\/div>\n
Everywhere, deepening puddles lapped<\/div>\n
at our ankles, and we shivered despite<\/div>\n
the crowds in whose warmth we nestled.<\/div>\n
We complained loudly about the dearth<\/div>\n
of portable heaters, the dampness, plus<\/div>\n
the lack of authentic restorations, and<\/div>\n
asked them why they could not simply<\/div>\n
move their planet further from its sun.<\/div>\n
