\nsulking in the shadows
\nwith the ghost of Mia Zapata,

\nthen on to Jaron’s house
\nwhere he sells us something
\nthat’s supposed to be like Syth-2.<\/p>\n
Pill popped and pinpoint pupiled
\nand we’re finally cooking
\nbass thudding
\nwith the drug in our ears
\nthe city comes to life,
\neven the bums cast
\nindescribable tremors of light
\nwith their every movement,
\nvivid auras in the dark.<\/p>\n
Off of Yesler
\nwe stumble across
\nan abandoned-house party,
\nsome local wailers playing inside
\nprobably talentless
\nbut to us it resounds
\nan orgasm in minor key
\nso shots and beers
\nand someone gives Carter
\na long wet kiss,
\nbut when empty kegs
\nput the band to rest
\nwe end up driving down the road,
\nchests ahum with the buzz
\nof truthful and passionate
\nand pointless conversation.<\/p>\n
Later,
\nsmoking and throwing bottles
\noff a cliffside near the highway
\nwe can just barely glimpse,
\nthrough the ocean’s spray,
\nthe clean white blinking lights
\nof the new city
\nhovering out above Puget Sound;
\nall alloy and pretension
\na hundred thousand people,
\nkids of six or seven
\nwhose feet have never
\ntouched the ground,
\nautomated, self sustained,
\nand from where we stand,
\nthe whole thing smaller
\nthan my hand held up to the sky.<\/p>\n
Somehow it seems
\nhigher and higher each day,
\nproof maybe that the old city
\nis still sinking,
\nafter all these years
\nsuccumbing to the soft
\nwet maw of the earth.<\/p>\n
