Coming of Age<\/p>\n

She shakes a red-brown hip jangling with clamshells,
\nher shimmering thighs bright with the out-flowing tide
\nand calls to me in a loon’s voice.<\/p>\n

“Don’t be afraid of the mud, honey.
\nIt’s so good for your complexion!”<\/p>\n

She is lip-smack salty and trade wind persuasive.
\nThe furrows of her hair are slick with chlorophyll
\nthat stains the string of corals at her throat.<\/p>\n

“Just leave your clothes there. Great Mother!
\nHaven’t I seen you naked before?”<\/p>\n

Not like this, bared to the bluefin sky,
\nflesh cold as a crested wave waiting to fall
\ninto the rip current, tongue like a sand dollar.<\/p>\n

“I’m…I’m not going to drown, am I?
\nYou said I can breathe under water now.”<\/p>\n

Pearly teeth flash behind a grin wide as a dolphin’s.
\nFingers like rockweed tendrils reach out to tug me in.
\nHer laughter is a fall of rain on a brine pool.<\/p>\n

“Trust your body, little minnow.
\nIt knows what it’s doing.”<\/p>\n

Stumbling into the sea foam, the transformation takes me;
\nskin to glistening scales, neck to slitted gills,
\nand we dive, a pair of salmon swimming home, always home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
