Licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons &#8211; https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Burning_Ship_Fractal.jpg#\/media\/File:Burning_Ship_Fractal.jpg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I.<\/p>\n<p>First the storms come<br \/>\nand we do everything<br \/>\nwe can to keep the ship afloat,<br \/>\na three-masted frigate bound<br \/>\nto Portsmouth out of Ceylon ,<br \/>\nriding low in the water with<br \/>\na heavy cargo of tea and spices.<\/p>\n<p>Dark clouds fill the horizon<br \/>\nand race toward us faster<br \/>\nthan the ship can run.<br \/>\nLight flees the sky and<br \/>\nin the false dusk that follows,<br \/>\na harsh moisture bristling<br \/>\nwith electricity fills the air.<\/p>\n<p>Before we can trim the sails<br \/>\nsheets of rain avalanche<br \/>\ndown, shafts of lightning<br \/>\nstrike the waters about us,<br \/>\nand the wind begins to howl<br \/>\nlike a bughouse monster.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we manage<br \/>\nto ride out that first storm<br \/>\nand that gives us courage.<br \/>\nThen there is another,<br \/>\ndangerous as the first,<br \/>\nand a third fiercer still.<\/p>\n<p>The masts topple,<br \/>\nthe hull is breached,<br \/>\nand we are thrown<br \/>\ninto the icy brine<br \/>\namidst the lashing rain.<\/p>\n<p>As we sink into the cold<br \/>\nand voracious deep,<br \/>\nfish with long rows<br \/>\nof razor-sharp teeth<br \/>\ntear us apart bite of<br \/>\nflesh by bite of flesh.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to take forever<br \/>\nbefore we can drown,<br \/>\nour mouths screaming<br \/>\nsoundlessly as our<br \/>\nconvulsing lungs<br \/>\nare filled with water.<\/p>\n<p>II<\/p>\n<p>Worse than the storms<br \/>\nare the deadly calms that<br \/>\nleave the sea motionless,<br \/>\na sheet of blue glass on<br \/>\nwhich reflections of the<br \/>\nlight above are blinding.<\/p>\n<p>We lie slack upon the decks<br \/>\nin whatever shade we find,<br \/>\nthe sun beating down upon<br \/>\nus from a merciless sky.<br \/>\nWe wait listlessly for our<br \/>\nrations of water and rum,<br \/>\nour minds lost and vacant<br \/>\nin the unremitting heat.<\/p>\n<p>When the sun finally sinks<br \/>\nto the horizon, we anticipate<br \/>\nthe temporary relief of night.<br \/>\nYet there is to be no night.<br \/>\nInstead of shrinking the light<br \/>\nalong the horizon grows.<\/p>\n<p>Glowing orange clouds come<br \/>\nrolling across the waters,<br \/>\nhorned clouds filled with<br \/>\nfrightening shapes and figures.<br \/>\nThe sea begins to boil as sheets<br \/>\nof sizzling lava sweep across it.<br \/>\nThe wood of the ship catches<br \/>\nfire and the decks collapse.<\/p>\n<p>As we are cast into the flames,<br \/>\nburning over and again,<br \/>\nthe raging fires consuming<br \/>\nus endlessly, our dazed<br \/>\nminds come alive at last,<br \/>\nour pasts parade before us.<\/p>\n<p>Now we realize that we<br \/>\nhave never been sailors.<br \/>\nWe are investment bankers,<br \/>\nbent politicians, cardsharps<br \/>\nand shady merchants,<br \/>\nrapists and thieves,<br \/>\noutrageous pimps<br \/>\nand audacious whores,<br \/>\ntyrannical husbands<br \/>\nand insidious wives.<br \/>\nAll nevermore.<\/p>\n<p>For now we understand<br \/>\nfull well for the countless<br \/>\ntime that we are nothing<br \/>\nmore than unrepentant sinners,<br \/>\nmandatory guests at our own<br \/>\ndamnations, sailing upon<br \/>\nthe seas of Hell forevermore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I.
